On the occasion of the 29th World Mental Health Day, let's talk together high incidence of adult depression.

Early detection and early treatment are the keys.

A national psychiatric survey report conducted by Peking University Sixth Hospital shows that after adding smoking, alcoholism and other substance dependence problems, the prevalence of mental disorders in the Chinese population is as high as 17%, of which anxiety and mood disorders account for 14%. In the future, depression may become the number one disease that plagues human physical and mental health.

The clinical manifestations of depression are mainly anxiety, neurasthenia, obsessive-compulsive disorder and depressive emotion. The peak age of onset is 20-60 years old, and the high-incidence groups include people who are in adolescence, menopause, and people with poor interpersonal relationships, in separation or living alone. Experts say that many depression patients choose to conceal their condition or even refuse treatment out of various considerations. In fact, if the treatment is carried out early in the onset, the chance of recurrence will be greatly reduced.

Lu Lin, Academician of the Chinese Academy of Sciences and President of Peking University Sixth Hospital said that it is necessary to learn to relieve stress, get proper physical exercise and have a regular schedule and sleep. Some mild anxiety, insomnia, depression and other mental illnesses can be solved by rest and relaxation. If early detection and early treatment are achieved, more than 70% of patients with mental illness can be cured.

How to avoid the risk of depression?

A team of experts from the University of Manchester in the United Kingdom conducted a study that reviewed a large amount of high-quality evidence to explore the causal relationship between key variable lifestyle factors and the risk of mental disorders and treatment outcomes. The study was published in a top journal of psychiatry on September 15. The lifestyle factors involved in these studies include physical exercise, smoking, diet, sleep while mental disorders include depression, anxiety and stress-related disorders, schizophrenia, bipolar disorder, and attention deficit hyperactivity disorder (ADHD).

Multiple lines of evidence suggest that physical exercise can be used as a primary prevention and treatment method for a variety of mental disorders. Therefore, proper exercise can not only improve the body’s resistance but also prevent depression. There is also more and more evidence that smoking can cause common and severe mental disorders; in addition, it is worth mentioning that poor sleep is also a high-risk factor for mental disorders.

Q: So, how to improve poor sleep caused by neurasthenia?

A: Taking Ganoderma can effectively improve neurasthenia.

Ganoderma can "soothe the nerves", "enhance wisdom" and "improve memory".—— "Shen Nong's Herbal Classics"

Ganoderma preparations have a significant effect on neurasthenia and insomnia. Generally, obvious effects appear within 1 to 2 weeks after administration. It is manifested as sleep improvement, appetite increase, weight gain, palpitation, headache, dizziness reduction or disappearance, refreshment, memory enhancement, physical strength enhancement. Other complications have also improved to varying degrees. The efficacy of Ganoderma lucidum preparations on neurasthenia and insomnia is related to the dosage and course of treatment. Larger dosages and longer treatment courses have high efficacy.

Some patients with chronic bronchitis, coronary heart disease, hepatitis or hypertension. with insomnia, after treatment with Ganoderma lucidum, their sleep improves, which is also helpful for the treatment of the primary disease.

Pharmacological tests have proved that Ganoderma lucidum can significantly reduce the autonomous activities of mice, shorten the latency period of mouse sleep caused by pentobarbital sodium, and prolong the sleep time of mice caused by pentobarbital sodium, indicating that it has a sedative effect.

The efficacy of Ganoderma lucidum on neurasthenia is not only related to its sedative effect but also to its steady-state regulation. That is, Ganoderma lucidum can restore the neuro-endocrine-immune regulation disorder to normal through its homeostatic regulation effect, thereby blocking the vicious circle of neurasthenia and insomnia, improving sleep, and obviously reducing other symptoms. Clinical report of Ganoderma in treating neurasthenia

In the 1970s, the Integrated Traditional Chinese and Western Medicine Group at the Department of Psychiatry, Third Affiliated Hospital, Beijing Medical College in Beijing, found that Lingzhi had significant clinical effect on neurasthenia as well as residual neurasthenic syndrome at schizophrenia recover stage (NS). In 100 of the clinical cases, 50 had been diagnosed with neurasthenia, and 50 with NS. Tablets containing 0.25 g of Reishi powder made from the Ganoderma lucidum fermentation liquid were used for the treatment. The patients were given 4 tablets each time, 3 times a day, for oral administration. Some of these patients took 4-5 tablets each time, twice a day. The treatment lasted more than one month, 6 months being the longest.
The therapeutic effect was evaluated, and classified into 3 categories: (a) “significantly improved” cases with disappearance of major symptoms; (b) “improved” cases with partial disappearance of major symptoms; and (c) “not affected” cases with no change observed after one-month treatment.

The results indicated that, after more than a month of the treatment, 61 cases improved significantly; 35 cases improved and 4 cases were not affected. Thus, the total effective rate was 96%. The rate of significantly improved cases for neurasthenia, 70%, were greater than NS (i.e., 52%). The efficacy on patients with “deficiency in qi and blood” was better than their counterparts.

Nonetheless, the symptoms significantly improved in both neurasthenia and NS patient groups after the treatment (Table 8-1). Most patients began to show improvements in 2-4 weeks of treatment. The significantly improved cases increased during the first of 2-4 months. After 4 months, the treatment did not produce further improvement, however.
